Optical image encryption is a significant research field of optical information processing because it offers multiple degrees of freedom to encode data securely. In the last few decades, efforts have been made to advance the optical encryption schemes based on the double random phase encoding (DRPE). But most of the reported techniques in literature under the DRPE framework belong to the category of symmetric cryptosystems, in which the keys used for encryption are identical to the decryption keys. In an environment of network security, a symmetric cryptosystem would suffer from problems in key distribution, management, and delivery. Also, most of the image encryption schemes, images are encrypted by using monochromatic light so color information is not preserved. Color images provide more information than gray scale images and also the additional color information contribute to the higher levels of security. In this seminar, we review some of the optical image encryption techniques for grey-scale and color images using asymmetric cryptosystem developed at the Optics Research Laboratory, Department of Physics, IIT Patna.
